5 Tracks For a Mindful + Moving Morning
For the past several months, I've been getting my days started with that kind of soul flowing, body moving, heart glowing music that brings my mind to different places and helps me begin my days with #positivevibes only. Most mornings, I do start with a short and effective workout, but have implemented something I like to call Yoga Wednesdays (super fun, fit, and fab name) where I dedicate my regimen to focusing on flexibility and mindfulness. It's certainly fun to complete a hard workout and see the results after practiced consistency, but the games end when you're hit with crippling soreness as a heartless reminder that you have neglected to listen to your body and stretch.
If you're like me, you too can get caught up in the goals grind - examples include workout frequency goal, weightloss goal, diet goal, be better than who I was yesterday goal - but it's important we take the time to focus on what's happening in the here and now. How our bodies are moving. How our breathing feels. How the music syncs with our innate rhythms.
So here are 5 tracks I turn to when I want to open my spirit and tell my beloved body: "Hey you. I care. I really do, and let me show you just how much."
1. DOMINANT... good if you like a soothing melody with a soft beat. Not to upbeat and not melancholic. Just right.
2. Black Girl In Om Spirituality Mix... a near-40 minute mix with tunes from Nina Simone, Bilal, and Mos Def.
3. gillespeterson Cuban Vinyl Mix... if you believe there's no better time to move those hips than in the morning, this is for you.
5. brandon* Earth and Sky... an calming tune with personality and flavor.
I enjoy using SoundCloud as my music listening medium because it continues to play related tracks without skipping a beat (pun intended)! Also, I find I'm introduced to new artists and genres of music this way, and who doesn't love that!
I usually play one of these tunes as I roll my crusty self out of bed and set my ligaments straight. Again, if you're like me, the music will take you into a different world and have you enjoying your day before you've even brushed your teeth!
Whether I'm stretching it out on the yoga mat or flying around my apartment like the bird I am in my head, listening to these tracks as I wake up helps me feel mindful and cared for before I enter the cold, unsympathetic world. Hehe, jk. :)
